Message from the Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Staff,

Second Semester of the school year has begun and the students and teachers of McMillan are teaching and learning the remaining standards for the school year and reviewing those previously taught and learned. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are preparing for the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) once again which is very important and a focus school-wide. This online assessment will be given statewide in both reading and math. Students in grades Kindergarten through 2ndgrade are taking common assessments and MAP assessments to track their progress and mastery level of concepts taught daily during instruction. While 3rd-5thgrade students are preparing for the SBAC, Kindergarten through 2ndgrade are working on reading strategies and skills under the Read by Grade 3 Law for all students to be reading on grade level by 3rdgrade.
Learning is the foundation to education. Success in learning and life become very difficult to achieve without having a good foundation in both reading and math. One key to success is PRACTICE. The more students read the better readers they become. Please be sure that your child is reading every day at home. It is the best homework assignment they can complete. Also, please encourage your child to go online to practice reading, math, and science on MobyMax, i-Ready, Study Island, and/or myOn nightly. Students can connect to MobyMax, i-Ready, Study Island, and myOn using their username and password.
As we work hard to increase student academic achievement and to raise the bar to become a “Five Star” school at McMillan Elementary, it will take the efforts of our entirecommunity to reach this goal. Please help us by asking your child what he/she has learned in school each day. Please ensure that your child gets plenty of sleep each night. Please have your child practice his/her basic math facts and reading nightly. Most of all, please ensure that your child is at school every day and on time. I cannot stress enough the importance of attendance and how much it affects students’ learning and their education. Attendance counts in the school’s star rating! Congratulations McMillan Elementary School on being a 3 Star School.
Thank you for the hard work that you put forth every day. Please continue to support your child and teacher for the success of the student. Ask your child’s teacher how you can “get involved.” Please join us for the School Organizational Team meeting on February 12, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the 2019-2020 Title I Budget. Also, please do not forget to sign-up to read to your child’s class during Nevada Reading Week (February 25,2019–March 1, 2019). “Keeping Children First! Powering Up Together through Data to Better Our Future!” Have a great month, and let’s keep learning and striving to do our best every day!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Antoinette Irby
